A Message of Interest to Physicians and Non-Physician Practitioners Regarding NPI and Enrollment Files

Although enrolled in Medicare, many physicians and non-physician practitioners who are eligible to order items or services or refer Medicare beneficiaries to other Medicare providers or suppliers for services do not have current enrollment records in Medicare. A current enrollment record is one that is in the Medicare Provider Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System (PECOS) and also contains the physician/non-physician practitioner’s National Provider Identifier (NPI). Under Phase 2 of the above referenced CRs, a physician or non-physician practitioner who orders or refers and who does not have a current enrollment record that contains the NPI will cause the claim submitted by the Part B provider/supplier who furnished the ordered or referred item or service to be rejected.

CMS continues to urge physicians and non-physician practitioners who are enrolled in Medicare but who have not updated their Medicare enrollment record since November 2003 to update their enrollment record now. If these physicians and non-physician practitioners have no changes to their enrollment data, they need to submit an initial enrollment application which will establish a current enrollment record in PECOS.

IMPORTANT MEDICARE INFORMATION

Dear Valued DJO Customer,

We are writing to advise you of Medicare’s new initiative to help protect your Medicare enrollment information by updating your records in the Provider Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System (PECOS).  Although Medicare has launched an awareness campaign regarding PECOS to the provider community, we have found that many of our customers are unaware of this initiative.  Therefore, we are providing this information directly to our DJO customers as a service to you.

Have you enrolled in Medicare or updated your Medicare enrollment information within the past 5 years?

If you enrolled more than 5 years ago and have not submitted any updates to your Medicare enrollment information, you will need to update your Medicare enrollment information in PECOS now.

Why is it important to DJO that you are aware of this campaign and that you update your records now in PECOS?

As of April 5, 2010 – Medicare will not pay DJO, or any other supplier of durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (“DMEPOS”), for any DMEPOS items you order for your Medicare beneficiaries if you are not in PECOS.  Medicare will make payment only if you are in the PECOS system!

We want to continue to service your Medicare patients efficiently.  Please help us avoid any potential disruptions to their care by enrolling in PECOS now.  To help expedite the process, please consider using the Internet-based PECOS.

We have attached to this letter an important Medicare communication on PECOS, and have also listed some key CMS Internet links that will provide you with additional information.  We thank you in advance for taking the time to ensure that your Medicare enrollment information is up-to-date, and for enabling us to continue to service your Medicare patients without disruption.

If you have a question about this information and would like someone from DJO to contact you, please email us at corporate.compliance@djoglobal.com.

Sincerely,

DJO, LLC
